Ok guys….. it is finally here, my eagerly awaited website, yay! I’ve got to say it has been an interesting journey to get it here. Lots of effective communication along the way let me tell you.
So then I thought what should I write? What is the real challenge for the Hospitality industry?
During my time as a staff member I remember thinking my superiors did nothing they just sat in the office and then meeeting with repesentivies that came in from the various different suppliers. They really did seem to have “The” life. So I aspired to be a manager, I wanted to know what made the business work, what were the things that went on in the background that I knew nothing about. And secretly to be honest thought I could do a better job than them half the time anyway……So on I went and through diligence and sheer hard work I finally arrived…. A manager at last…. and then reality struck. It wasn’t easy at all!!!! I had to manage these other staff (that now thought I did nothing in the office and that my job was easy. Boy did I have news for them) I had to do the rosters, I had to go to meetings, I had to see the reps and make sure their prices were right and negotiate if not, I had to ensure the bands were booked, the events were planned…. and on and on it went. All the while I wanted to support my team and let them see that I was not afraid of getting my hands “dirty” – to show them I was a different Manager.
I will be honest guys I spent alot of time chasing my tail and secretely wondering when they were going to wake up and realise that I couldn’t do this job… I worked longer hours than I really had to, I took every stress on to me, I made sure I looked after the good staff (and at times the not so good ones) because without them the business could not function. If someone was sick…. I worked, if someone was late I worked. As you can imagine all this led to a very stressed, worn out and frazzeled me!!!! Oh and did I mention my personal life……
Maybe next time.
